Lab safety and SDS
Wed, Jan 27, 2027 · Week 2 · Biotechnology for Health (Biomedical Innovations)
Today's goal: Demonstrate safe lab conduct and read a Safety Data Sheet to identify hazards, PPE, and first-aid measures.
What a finished product looks like
This is a model of the work you should turn in today. Use it to check your own: match the structure and the level of detail, do not copy it. Your data and wording should be your own.
SDS reading worksheet (Sample chemical: bleach, sodium hypochlorite solution)
- Section 2, Hazards: Causes skin irritation and serious eye irritation. Corrosive. Releases toxic chlorine gas if mixed with acids or ammonia.
- Section 8, PPE and exposure controls: Wear splash goggles, nitrile gloves, and a lab apron. Use only with adequate ventilation.
- Section 4, First aid: Eye contact, rinse at the eyewash for at least 15 minutes and seek help. Skin contact, wash with plenty of water. Inhalation, move to fresh air.
- Emergency equipment I located in this lab: eyewash by the back sink, safety shower at the door, fire extinguisher by the exit, SDS binder on the shelf next to the prep bench.
Handling plan in one sentence: I will wear goggles, gloves, and an apron, keep bleach away from any acid or ammonia, and know the eyewash is at the back sink before I start.
Also due today: Complete the safety and SDS practical checkpoint with the instructor, then submit the worksheet to Schoology by end of period.
