Practice gel and practice row: separate practice, not your case

This worked model uses the evidence sheet's training gel (one questioned lane Q, a swab from a practice water bottle, and three reference lanes R1, R2 and R3, four bands each) and one made-up panel row. It is not evidence for Case A or Case B. Use the structure, not these lanes or answers, on your sheet.

Read the questioned lane first

Lay a straightedge across the gel at each band in lane Q and read the scale. Q's bands sit at 8.0, 6.0, 3.5 and 1.5. Write them down before looking at any reference lane. This is a description of practice positions, not a gel you personally ran.

Make the three allowed calls

Practice comparisonSupplied positionsBands aligned?CallLimit
Q and R1R1 at 8.0, 6.0, 3.5, 1.5Four of fourMATCHR1 is the source of the cells on the bottle; the gel does not say when or why
Q and R2R2 at 8.0, 5.0, 3.5, 1.5Second band sits at 5.0, not 6.0; one band clearly differsEXCLUDEDR2 is ruled out as the source of this swab only, not ruled out of anything else
Q and R3R3 at 8.0, 6.0, [unreadable near 3.5], 1.5Three readable bands align; one is unreadableCANNOT EXCLUDENot a match; a match needs every band. A partial read is an inconclusive call here, not an identification

A match is a whole-column judgment. Two lanes that line up at every band look the same top to bottom; one band out of place is what an exclusion looks like; a band you cannot place leaves the call open.

Match strength with practice numbers

The practice lab says a full 4-site match like R1's happens by chance in about 1 of 60,000 unrelated people: 1 ÷ 60,000 = 0.0000167, about 0.00002. R3's 3-site partial is 1 in 4,000: 1 ÷ 4,000 = 0.00025. The smaller decimal is the rarer match, so R1 is the stronger identification. Your B3 task uses 1 in 10,000,000 and 1 in 800,000, not these numbers, and needs its own division. No rarity number is supplied for your case.

Practice panel row

Made-up value: sodium 128 mmol/L, with a reference range of 135 to 145 mmol/L. Inside? No, below. How far? 135 minus 128 = 7 mmol/L below the bottom of the range. Flag it BELOW and write the number beside the range. Interpretation waits for the pattern; one row names no cause.

Finished practice product

Q matches R1 (four of four bands), excludes R2 (one band differs), and cannot exclude R3 (one band unreadable). The full match is rarer by chance (0.0000167) than the partial (0.00025), so it is the stronger identification. The practice sodium value sits 7 mmol/L below its range.

1. Read your own case record

Lane number + supplied band positions, top to bottom on the 10-to-0 scale

2. Apply the three-call rule, band by band

Every band aligned = MATCH

Every readable band aligned, one unreadable = CANNOT EXCLUDE

One band clearly differs = EXCLUDED

Request-card references: copy the reported summary and label it Reported

3. State the limit in every row

Whose cells, not when they got there or what they did. No verdict.

4. Log the panel, value beside range

Unit attached. ABOVE / BELOW / inside. Screen rows stay reported categories.

Then ONE pattern sentence: direction only, no cause word.

5. Minute 60: your case's twist record

OBSERVATION (copied) · INFERENCE (labeled) · NOT SETTLED

6. Ceiling sentence, check, submit

The matrix says whose. The panel says what state. What happened is still open.

Find your own-case lane table and the migration-scale rule. For each questioned lane, compare its three band positions with each reference lane on the strip sheet, band by band. If every band aligns, write MATCH. If every readable band aligns and a band is unreadable, write CANNOT EXCLUDE. If at least one band clearly differs, write EXCLUDED. For the two request-card references, copy the reported summary and label it Reported, because no band positions are supplied. In every row, write the limit: a match names whose cells, not when they arrived or what the person did. Then log every panel value beside its supplied range with the unit attached, flag it ABOVE or BELOW or mark it inside, copy the screen rows as reported categories, and write one pattern sentence that names a direction and no cause. At minute 60, log only your own case's twist record in three labeled parts: what it states, what earlier assumption it changes, and what it does not settle. End with the ceiling sentence. The finished sheet does not claim a test you ran, a person's actions, a diagnosis or a cause of death.

Optional restart cue

Find the next unanswered task ID. Use R2 for the matrix, R3 for the practice decimals, R4 for the panel grid, R5 for the twist note and R6 for the vocabulary. Do not switch to the other case or create a second product.

Turn in one sheet

Complete one match matrix and panel sheet, Parts A to E including the twist note. Hand the paper sheet to Mr. Mendoza before leaving, or submit one PDF to Wk5 D10 · Barcodes and Panels (PLTW 1.1.6) by September 22 at 11:59 PM. Use your period and investigator code. Do not submit twice; keep notebook pages in your notebook.

This model and the B3 practice numbers do not require another upload. Complete Parts A to E and your twist note in the one match matrix and panel sheet.

Case B: submit to Wk5 D10 · Barcodes and Panels (PLTW 1.1.6)

Keep today's sheet for the next assigned case lesson, Wk5 D12 · The Clock in the Body (PLTW 1.2.2). What happened is still open; do not carry a verdict forward.

Sources and optional background

F1 shows the workflow. The separate practice gel and sodium row model the calls and the flag. Guided notes support your work but are not another submission. The DNA Fingerprinting and Toxicology and Drug Delivery simulations prepare you for any later teacher-directed bench work; this sheet does not require them and does not certify them. Carry your sheet to the next assigned case lesson. What happened is still open.

A match names the source of the DNA, whose cells, not when they got there or what that person did. A panel flag is a record flag beside a supplied range, not a diagnosis. The finished sheet does not claim a test you ran, a person's actions, a diagnosis or a cause of death.
