Design brief
Thu, Feb 18, 2027 · Week 5 · Biotechnology for Health (Biomedical Innovations)
Today's goal: Write a design brief that states the ER problem, criteria, and constraints for the prototype.
What a finished product looks like
This is a model of the work you should turn in today. Use it to check your own: match the structure and the level of detail, do not copy it. Your data and wording should be your own.
ER prototype design brief
Problem (one sentence): Design a treatment-room turnover process and bay layout that cuts moderate-severity waits below 60 minutes without adding rooms.
Measurable design criteria (what success looks like):
- Average room turnover time at or under 15 minutes.
- Direct staff line of sight to every occupied bay.
- Moderate-severity wait reduced below 60 minutes in the simulated flow.
Constraints (boundaries the design cannot cross):
- Space: the existing ER footprint, no expansion.
- Staffing: current nurse-to-patient ratio, no new hires assumed.
- Budget: layout changes only, no major construction.
- Safety codes: must meet infection-control and exit-clearance requirements.
What a successful prototype demonstrates: a scaled floor plan plus a turnover workflow that, run against the flow data, meets all three criteria while respecting every constraint.
Also due today: Submit the design brief to Schoology today; keep it open during Wednesday's build session.
