Ophthalmology Apprenticeship

Learn the eye exam from the assistant's chair: visual acuity checks, the slit lamp, trial lenses, and the habits of a real clinic. New group; no experience needed.

Careers

Where this points

The skills you practice here are the same ones these jobs run on. Every card carries pay and outlook read straight from O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation site, the schools that train for it, and an honest read on what AI is likely to change.

Inside Ophthalmology

Know the word
Visual acuity

How sharply you see, measured against a standard chart. The 20/20 you have heard of is a score, not a goal; plenty of healthy eyes read better.

Community boards

Our three norms
  • Celebrate specifically. Shoutouts name the win, not just the person.
  • Ask anything. No question is too basic, and families are welcome.
  • Protect privacy. First names and last initials only. Never post a phone number, address, grade, or health detail.

Questions families ask

What will I actually do?

Assistant-side skills, observation first: visual acuity testing, working around the slit lamp, handling trial frames and lenses, and recording measurements the way a clinic does. Nothing invasive; nobody touches an eye.

Do I need experience?

No. The group starts from one of the first skills every ophthalmic assistant learns: running an accurate vision check.

When does it meet?

The schedule is being set. Join the interest list and you will be the first to hear the day, time, and room.

Does this count for anything?

This is a John Hay group, and whether it earns logged hours or credit is still being worked out. Details are posted here the moment they are confirmed, not before. What is certain now: real skills, practiced properly.
