Respond to a spill

Tell people, cover it, work from the outside in, wait, then lift. Learn why the instinct to wipe from the middle makes a small spill into a large one.

  • Wiping moves material rather than removing it: A cloth dragged across a spill carries the material with it, so the direction you wipe decides whether the spill gets bigger or smaller.
  • Disinfectant needs its time: The same rule that governs a bench treatment governs a spill: the product has to sit before anything is lifted.

Now handle the two things that make a spill worse than it looks: glass, and silence.

Step 1: Nothing sharp is picked up by hand
Broken glass in a treated spill is lifted with tongs, a dustpan or stiff card. A gloved hand is not protection against an edge, and it is easy to miss a fragment in a wet mess.
Step 2: Small spills are still reported
Reporting is how a room learns that a container leaks, a shelf is too high, or a step in a procedure produces splashes. A spill nobody hears about happens again next period.
Step 3: Check yourself before you check the bench
If a spill reached clothing or skin, that comes first. A stained coat is a warning that the barrier was breached, not something to deal with at the end.

Why it's right: Examination gloves resist liquid and not cutting, and fragments are hard to see in a wet mess. A rigid tool keeps the hand away from every piece, including the ones nobody spotted.

Why the others miss:
  • A: A sink is not a disposal route for glass, and it puts fragments where the next person reaches in without looking.
  • B: Gloves give no protection against a sharp edge, and the wet surface makes small fragments almost impossible to see.
  • D: Sweeping toward an edge sends fragments over the side, and catching them in a soft bag puts an edge against a hand holding it.

  1. Step 1: Read the mark as evidence: A drop on a sleeve is proof that liquid left the slide and travelled as far as your arm.
  2. Step 2: Ask what else is at that distance: Your hands, your face and anything else at bench height, so the technique that produced the splash is what needs changing.

Why it's right: The mark is evidence that liquid left the slide and reached your arm, which means it could have reached skin or eyes at the same distance. The coat stopped this one and the technique still needs changing.

Why the others miss:
  • A: Storage temperature has nothing to do with a splash produced by how the reagent was applied.
  • B: Washing deals with the mark and ignores what the mark is telling you about where the liquid went.
  • D: The coat did work, and treating that as the end of the matter throws away the only warning you get before a splash reaches skin.

Work one example

Broth goes across the bench. You say so out loud, check your gloves and eye protection, lay towels over it, then pour disinfectant starting at the outer edge and working toward the middle. You leave it while you deal with the rest of the station, then lift the towels into the waste route for that lab and treat the surface again.
