Handle sharps and load a sharps container
A used needle goes straight into the rigid container, uncapped, at the bench where it was used. Learn why every part of that sentence is doing work.
- A puncture goes under the skin: Skin is the barrier that gloves and washing depend on. A puncture bypasses it entirely, which is why sharps get a category of their own.
- Blood can carry infection: A used needle carries a small amount of blood, and that is enough for a bloodborne pathogen to be delivered under the skin.

- Step 1: Ask what the line represents: It is the level above which the lid can no longer close over the contents.
- Step 2: Choose the action that keeps the lid usable: Closing and swapping is the only option that keeps points below the opening.
Why it's right: The line marks the level above which the lid can still close over the contents. Past it, points sit level with the opening a hand has to approach, so the container is closed and swapped.
- B: Filling until it jams guarantees points at the opening for every deposit made after the line was passed.
- C: A sharps container is never emptied and never reused. Tipping used points into a bag is the exact hazard the rigid wall was for.

- Step 1: Ask why the model can do this: There is no patient, so there is no person to carry an infection between.
- Step 2: Ask what that means for the rule: The rule was not relaxed, it simply has nothing to act on here, so it has to be learned from the statement rather than from the practice.
Why it's right: A training arm has no bloodstream, so there is nobody to carry an infection between. The rule is not weakened, it is just not exercised, which is why the activity states it in words instead of leaving it to the procedure.
- A: Risk category never makes a reused needle acceptable, and a patient's risk status is often unknown to the person drawing.
- B: Fresh sterile needles for every patient is not restricted to draws. It applies wherever a needle enters a person.
