Recover fingerprint powder instead of spreading it

The wand that lays powder down is the same tool that lifts it back. Learn how the magnet does both jobs and why the station is left with the powder back in its container.

  • A magnet inside a tool can be moved in and out: Sliding a magnet away from the tip releases whatever it was holding. That is what turns one wand into both an applicator and a recovery tool.
  • Loose powder travels: A fine powder does not stay where it was dropped. It moves onto hands, sleeves and the next class's bench unless it is collected.

Step 1: Excess comes off the same way it went on
If the print is buried, re-engage the magnet and move the wand over it. The loose powder leaves with the wand and the powder stuck to the oil stays behind.
Step 2: Never blow it and never wipe it
Blowing puts fine powder into the air you are breathing and across the bench. Wiping takes the print with it. The magnet is the tool for this.
Step 3: The bench gets cleared
The procedure ends by returning the powder to its container and cleaning any extra off the work surface, so the station is handed on in the state you would want to find it.

  1. Step 1: Separate the two kinds of powder: Some is stuck to the oil of the print. The rest is just lying there.
  2. Step 2: Pick the tool that only takes the loose kind: The magnet lifts what is free and leaves what is bound to the oil.

Why it's right: The magnet takes the powder that is merely resting on the slide and leaves the powder that has stuck to the oils of the print. That is the difference between rescuing a print and destroying one.

Why the others miss:
  • A: Tape does mostly take what is stuck, but pressing it onto a slide swimming in loose powder gives you a smeared lift you cannot read.
  • C: Wiping removes the print along with the powder, so this turns a heavy print into no print at all.
  • D: Blowing scatters fine powder into your breathing zone and across the bench, and it can carry the print away with it.

  2. Step 2: Ask why both halves are there: One protects the shared supply. The other protects whoever sits here next.

Why it's right: The procedure asks for two things and both matter. The powder is a shared supply that the next group needs, and loose powder left on a bench does not stay on that bench for long.

Why the others miss:
  • A: Waiting for someone else means the powder sits loose on a bench that other classes will use before the end of the day.
  • B: A folded paper of loose powder is not a container, and it will open in a drawer or a bag at the worst moment.
  • D: Throwing away usable powder from a shared container leaves the next group short for no reason.

Work one example

Your print is dusted and a little heavy. You lift the handle to bring the magnet back to the tip, pass it over the print, and the extra powder leaves with the wand. Lower the handle over the container and it drops back in.
