Handle preserved specimens in dissection
Three hazards sit on one tray: the holding fluid, the blade, and the tissue. Learn what each one needs from you and where each one goes at the end.
- A dissection tray holds more than one hazard: Students often see only the blade. The holding fluid and the animal tissue each carry their own requirements, and they do not share a disposal route.

- Step 1: Follow the object, not the intention: The route is not specimen to mouth. It is specimen to glove to food to mouth.
- Step 2: Ask where the route can be cut: The only reliable cut is keeping food out of the room in the first place.
Why it's right: Nobody plans to swallow the specimen, and that is not the route. The route runs from the tray to a gloved hand to whatever that hand picks up, and a drink bottle is a very easy thing to pick up without thinking.
- A: Concentration matters for the quality of the dissection, but the ban is a contamination control, not a focus policy.
- C: Taste is a comfort complaint. The rule exists whether or not the fluid has any smell at all.
- D: Pest control is a housekeeping concern in every room and is not why this specific ban is written into laboratory practice.

You finish the heart examination. The scalpel blade goes into the sharps container while it is still on the handle or with the remover your teacher provides. The tissue goes into the container your teacher designates. The tray and the probes are washed and disinfected. Clean paper goes in the ordinary bin. Then the bench is wiped and you wash your hands.
