Handle a flask heated in a microwave

One minute or until clear, out with a mitt, and cool until your palm agrees. Learn why the clock is not the endpoint and why hot glass looks exactly like cold glass.

  • Hot glass looks like cold glass: There is no color change and no steam coming off a closed flask to warn you. The only reliable information is knowing what has just happened to it.
  • An endpoint is a condition, not a countdown: When a protocol says a time or a condition, the condition is the real instruction and the time is an estimate of how long the condition usually takes.

Step 1: The palm test is a real instruction
This protocol says to wait until the flask is comfortable to hold in the palm. That is a deliberate check with no thermometer in it, and it is the signal to move on.
Step 2: There is work to do while it cools
The protocol gives you tasks to complete during the wait, so cooling time is not dead time and there is no reason to rush it.
Step 3: Boiling past the endpoint costs you water
Once the mixture is clear, more boiling only sends water out as vapor. That water was measured on purpose, and what leaves does not come back.
