Cover the gel box before the leads go on
The workflow says cover, then attach. Learn why that order is a safety rule written as a sequence, and what the reverse order looks like at the end of a run.
- A conducting liquid connected to a supply is live: The buffer is chosen because it carries current. That same property means the tray is part of an electrical circuit as soon as the leads are on.
- The order of steps can itself be the safeguard: Some protections are not equipment. They are a sequence chosen so there is never a moment when two hazards overlap.

A run has finished and a student reaches to lift the cover and get the gel out. What has to happen first?

- Step 1: Recall the order going in: Cover, then leads, then on.
- Step 2: Reverse it coming out: Off, then leads, then cover.
Why it's right: Coming out is the going-in order run backwards. The supply goes off and the leads come off while the cover is still in place, so the chamber is only ever open once it is disconnected.
- B: Emptying a connected chamber means handling it while it is still in a circuit, and where the buffer goes is a separate disposal question for your teacher.
- C: Photographing the gel is often useful, but doing it before disconnecting leaves the chamber live for no reason.
- D: Nothing here is hot enough to need cooling, and waiting with the supply still on is the state you were trying to leave.

Partway through a run a group sees that one lead has slipped out at the power supply. What do they do?

- Step 1: Ask what a loose lead means: The path is broken, so nothing is moving anyway.
- Step 2: Ask what to change first: The supply, because that is what makes handling the connection safe.
Why it's right: A broken connection means the run has already stopped, so there is nothing to lose by switching off. Doing that before touching the lead is what makes refitting it a safe job rather than a live one.
- A: Refitting a connection on a live supply is the exact situation the cover-then-connect order exists to avoid.
- B: There is no run happening on one connection. A circuit needs both, so leaving it means the gel sits still for the rest of the period.
- D: The cover is the one thing that should not move here, and the gel is not moving anyway with the circuit broken.
