Clean and dry dissection instruments

The last step of the heart examination covers tools and trays as well as the specimen. Learn why drying is the part people skip and what it costs the kit.

  • Steel corrodes when it stays wet: Instruments are metal. Water left sitting on them, especially with salt and tissue in it, is what turns a sharp clean tool into a pitted one.
  • A kit is a counted set: A dissection kit is issued as a set and has to come back as one. A tool that never arrives back is missing rather than lost, and somebody has to find it.

Step 1: The tray is equipment too
A dissection pan gets rinsed and left to drain rather than stacked wet with the next one. Stacked wet pans stay wet between them for days.
Step 2: Count the kit back
A dissection kit is a counted set. Everything that came out goes back in, and a missing instrument is reported now rather than discovered by the next class.
Step 3: The specimen route is your teacher's call
Animal tissue and anything soaked in preservative have a route set by the school and the district. You follow the instruction you are given, and you never improvise a bin or a sink.

  1. Step 1: Ask where a lost probe probably is: In a tray, under paper towel, or in a bin at this bench.
  2. Step 2: Ask when it is easiest to find: Now, while the station is still set up and people remember.

Why it's right: A missing instrument is nearly always within a metre of where it was used, and that stops being true the moment the room is cleared. Saying so immediately is also what keeps a sharp item out of a waste bag.

Why the others miss:
  • B: A note is honest, and it still leaves the instrument wherever it is, possibly in a bin, for someone to find later.
  • C: By next lesson the bench has been cleared and used by other classes, and a probe in a waste bag has already left the building.
  • D: Moving instruments between kits makes both counts wrong and hides the fact that something is genuinely missing.

  1. Step 1: Ask who decides: The activity says to follow your teacher's instructions, and disposal routes are set by the school and the district.
  2. Step 2: Rule out the improvised routes: The sink and the ordinary bin are guesses, and both can be wrong.

Why it's right: The activity itself sends you to your teacher, and it does that because disposal of animal tissue is governed by school and district policy rather than by what looks reasonable at the bench.

Why the others miss:
  • A: Wrapping something does not change what it is or which stream it belongs in, and that decision is not made at the bench.
  • B: A specimen that has been open on a bench for a period is not going back into storage for another class to use.
  • D: Tissue and preservative do not belong in a drain, and running water does not make that route acceptable.

The rule

Work one example

You rinse the probe and the scissors, dry both on paper towel, and lay them back in the kit in their own slots. The pan is rinsed and left to drain. The specimen goes where your teacher directs, and the gloves come off last.
