Testing for an indicator organism instead of the pathogen
Use coliform bacteria as a stand-in for waste reaching a water supply, and say exactly what a coliform result does and does not certify.
- Not every bacterium causes disease: Indicator logic only makes sense once you can hold apart the organism that makes somebody ill and the organism that signals a way in.
- A sample stands in for something bigger: An indicator is a substitution, the same move as judging a whole well from one bottle, so the habit of asking what a stand-in can carry starts here.
