Biomolecules and design
Wed, Sep 16, 2026 · Week 4 · Principles of Biomedical Technology (Principles of Biomedical Science)
Today's goal: Identify the four biomolecules and outline an experimental design before the PLTW evidence task.
What a finished product looks like
This is a model of the work you should turn in today. Use it to check your own: match the structure and the level of detail, do not copy it. Your data and wording should be your own.
Pre-lab design (Lin, Period 1):
Hypothesis: If the unknown sample contains a reducing sugar, then Benedict's solution will change from blue to orange or brick red when heated.
Variables: Independent variable is the sample tested; dependent variable is the color change; controlled variables are reagent amount, heating time, and tube size.
| Biomolecule | Indicator | Positive color | Negative color |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reducing sugar | Benedict's | Orange to brick red | Blue |
| Starch | Lugol's iodine | Blue-black | Yellow-brown |
| Protein | Biuret | Violet | Blue |
| Lipid | Sudan IV | Red layer in oil | No red layer |
Also due today: Hand in your pre-lab sheet before leaving. Also complete the online evidence-testing and toxicology intro task.
