Before you sketch: the four setup checks

  1. Slide clipped on the stage, light on, lowest objective first.
  2. Focus on the lowest power, then climb one objective at a time. Never start on high power.
  3. Immersion oil belongs on the 100x oil objective only. If oil reaches a dry objective, stop and wipe it with lens paper.
  4. Find the ocular scale in the eyepiece before you measure anything.

The heart station, and what a slide cannot tell you

Activity 1.2.5 support

Name Period Date

Preserved heart: locate and name

Write what you located on the specimen in front of you. If you could not find one, write "not found" rather than guessing.

Chamber 1
Chamber 2
Chamber 3
Chamber 4
A valve I located
A second valve
A vessel entering
A vessel leaving

The limits, in your own words

One limitation of identifying tissue from a slide (what a slide cannot show you):
One source of error in my own procedure today (something that could have changed what I saw):
What this record does not prove:

Before you turn it in

  1. All four panels have a sketch, a magnification written as a product, one labeled feature, and two sentences.
  2. The heart station names four chambers, two valves, and two vessels, or says "not found" where that is honest.
  3. All three limit boxes are filled in. A blank limit box is not the same as no limits.
  4. Save both pages as one PDF and submit it in your own Schoology section. Check the uploaded preview before you leave.
